Plot register

Which choice causes the next consequence?

A premise tells us what could happen. A plot shows why each turn follows from pressure and choice. Use this archive to replace disconnected events with a chain that narrows options, raises cost, and changes what resolution can mean.

Start here

  1. Separate premise from plot. Name the intriguing situation, then ask who must act inside it.
  2. Write the controlling question. Make the outcome uncertain and the cost legible.
  3. Apply inciting pressure. Disrupt the character’s existing strategy, not merely their schedule.
  4. Build a because–therefore chain. Each major turn happens because someone acted; therefore a new problem exists.
  5. Change the meaning at midpoint. Reveal, reversal, or commitment should make the old plan insufficient.
  6. Force the crisis choice. Make the character choose between incompatible values or losses.
  7. Let the climax answer through action. The resolution should expose who the character has become and what the world now costs.

Core field notes

  • Story structure as a diagnostic tool, not a formula.
  • Three-act, seven-point, and beat-sheet systems compared by story problem.
  • Stakes that change decisions instead of merely sounding large.
  • Subplots that apply different pressure to the same controlling value.
  • Short-story structure: compress choice, not meaning.

Follow the chain into a story

A plot record connects to the character making the consequential choice and the world that makes it expensive. Published stories show the combination; development routes say plainly what is still missing.
