Character register

What must this person choose—and why is that choice difficult for them?

Character building begins when a person’s desire meets the belief, relationship, or fear that makes direct action impossible. Use this archive to move from a promising identity to a character whose choices can carry a story.

Start here

  1. Name the visible desire. What concrete outcome would the character pursue even if no plot arrived to interrupt them?
  2. Find the misbelief or limited truth. Which protective idea once made sense but now distorts what they see?
  3. Add a live contradiction. Put two credible values in conflict; avoid a decorative “flaw.”
  4. Give relationships leverage. Each important person should pressure, enable, expose, or complicate a choice.
  5. Track choices, not moods. An arc becomes visible when later decisions differ meaningfully from earlier ones.

Core field notes

  • Character backstory: keep only what changes the present.
  • Positive, flat, and negative arcs: three different relationships to truth.
  • Voice under pressure: syntax, evasion, and what a character refuses to name.
  • Writing historical figures as people, not costumes.
  • Relationship maps that show exchanged pressure instead of decorative connections.

Each record identifies desire, need, misbelief, contradiction, agency, relationships, historical basis, and the turns of a possible arc. A record may be a documented figure, an original person, or a clearly labelled composite.

Follow a character into fiction

Character pages connect only to worlds and plots where the pressure is meaningful. When all three records are developed, the combination can become a short story, a development route, or a finished book.
