The State Beneath the Oracle
A public world record: place, power, daily life, and the rules that make story choices costly.

The public dossier
This proposed world treats prophecy as interpretation inside a state sustained by unequal status and labor—not as a glowing command delivered to an isolated warrior.
At a glance
- Basis: Sparta and the Thermopylae tradition in the early fifth century BCE; exact dates require a chronology.
- Altered condition: competing listeners receive the same prophetic wording but carry different material signs of it.
- Access: civic status, religious authority, military command, mobility, and the right to speak publicly.
- Cost: acting on an interpretation binds people who did not choose it.
Equilibrium under threat
Military reputation and civic order depend on subordinated labor and alliances often omitted from heroic retellings. The Persian invasion and oracle place pressure on the state, but the story’s conflict comes from human interpretation and policy.
Wonder boundary
No divine apparition, combat magic, monster, or infallible future sight is approved. The speculative sign, if retained, can confirm only that multiple recipients heard or carried the same words; it cannot prove which interpretation is correct.
Record and invention
Herodotus reports the oracle and a multi-polity force at Thermopylae. Historians debate ancient narratives and later legend. The bearer and material sign are inventions. The legacy armoured-warrior cover is not evidence of dress, equipment, or supernatural canon.
