The Sealed Republic of Proof

A public world record: place, power, daily life, and the rules that make story choices costly.

A cutaway research house divides laboratories, studies, corridors, service rooms, and locked manuscript cupboards

The public dossier

This proposed world is Restoration and early modern England organized around a practical question: who may witness, copy, repeat, finance, or suppress a result?

At a glance

  • Historical basis: Newton’s documented scientific, alchemical, religious, and institutional work; exact year not selected.
  • Altered condition: one experiment creates a repeatable material effect with political value.
  • Access: instruments, recipes, Latin and vernacular literacy, patronage, rooms, keys, and reputation.
  • Cost: repetition makes the effect stronger and the evidence harder to contain; the precise speculative cost is not locked.

Equilibrium under threat

Private inquiry, correspondence, patronage, and public demonstration can coexist while valuing different kinds of proof. The equilibrium breaks when an assistant’s record makes a formerly private result reproducible outside Newton’s control.

Daily life, power, and exchange

Paper, glassware, fuel, metals, time, and safe space are material constraints. A court patron, society witness, household worker, printer, or Mint official would hold different authority. The exact combination cannot be chosen until the year is fixed; “Restoration London” is not one timeless institution.

Wonder and boundary

The inventory says a successful experiment creates political leverage. It does not specify a power. This dossier intentionally leaves the supernatural effect unresolved rather than inventing canon. It must eventually have a testable channel, limit, cost, and failure mode rooted in the chosen procedure.

Record and invention

Newton’s alchemical manuscripts are documented. The “secret society,” assistant, successful anomalous result, and political struggle are inventions. Public art must not resemble documentary evidence.

Development gate

Select an exact date and site, research household and institutional access, then lock one experiment and its consequences before expanding locations or factions.

Characters

The people who can act within this world.

The Divided Assistant

The Divided Assistant is a proposed original viewpoint whose work makes Newton’s experiments legible to other people while leaving the assistant exposed to obligations Newton can refuse.

The Experiment No Patron Can Own

Because the witness demands proof, the assistant prepares a repeatable record. Therefore the result can travel beyond the room. Because Newton restricts circulation, the patron treats the missing procedure as deliberate defiance. Therefore the assistant become

The Secret Society of Newton’s Disciples

An original assistant helps Isaac Newton produce a repeatable result that patrons and investigators want to own. The assistant must decide what a truthful experimental record owes to the public when disclosure and secrecy can both cause harm.
